In the Company of Sisters: Portraits and Reflections
is a photo/essay book by Deborah Donnelley that explores the contours
of the relational landscape among sisters over time. From 1987 to
1992, while living in Massachusetts, Deborah photographed over two
hundred and fifty sets of sisters. More than a decade later and
now living in Chicago, Deborah returned to some of that first group
of women and interviewed them about their lives and their thoughts
on being a sister. Having two sisters and four stepsisters, Deborah
became interested in sisters because of her own journeys through
what she calls the “complex intimacies” of sister relationships.
In the Company of Sisters: Portraits and Reflections
is the result of her fifteen-year project.
